Every child deserves access to a safe and bright future
On #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour 2023 our partners at the Pokhara Chamber of Commerce & Industry held an Interaction Programme on Ending Child Labour in Pokhara. Attendees included government officials, child workers, civil society plus media representatives.
The event highlighted the issue of child labour in Pokhara and the need for city authorities to develop plans and allocate funds to address this issue. Trade associations made commitments not to employ children under 14 years old and the Employment & Labour Office requested information on existing child labourers stating it would take action to remove them from illegal work.
Impact and Future Outlook
Our Child Labour Elimination Programme with Pokhara Chamber of Commerce & Industry has successfully contributed to a 73% reduction in child labour (for children under the working age of 14). But we know there is still A LOT to achieve.
The impact of the pandemic and global economic situation has made things precarious for many families and the number of children pushed into child labour is at risk of increasing significantly. The International Labour Organization launched the first World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 as a way to highlight the plight of children engaged in child labour.
