As our Silver Jubilee year draws to an end, we’d like to reflect on everything that our incredible community of supporters and staff have accomplished in Nepal this year and over the past 25 years. Below are just a few of the ways we’ve made an impact.
Thousands of children and families were supported during major disasters
Over the last 25 years, Nepal has experienced times of acute crisis. Two that stand out are the devastation caused by the 2015 earthquake and the distress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic over recent years.
During times of crisis, our team works tirelessly to ensure at-risk children and families are supported. During the aftermath of the earthquake and the pandemic, we distributed vital food supplies to families that lost their incomes or access to food, provided emergency shelter to children separated from their families, and made sure children could keep learning whilst schools were closed.
These moments of crisis required flexibility, rapid responses, and involved heroic levels of effort from our team. Our commitment to the communities we work with extends across all circumstances and we will always step in to protect the most vulnerable in times of acute crisis and unexpected hardship.
We protected thousands of at-risk children
Since Kidasha was founded, we have supported tens of thousands of children at-risk of exploitation or harm. During 2022, we supported thousands more.
Despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic restrictions, we continued to provide protection services to children living in crisis situations through our rehabilitation shelter, midway home, and six community centres in 2022. We delivered information on how to access child protection, services, and support to over 4,000 children and adolescents. We also supported 200 child clubs, adolescent groups and parenting groups in areas of extreme poverty, providing members with a safe forum in which to discuss any significant issues and challenges regarding their safety and wellbeing.
Next year, we will continue to support as many children as we can, in as many ways as they need.
Our programmes have been endorsed by local governments and decision makers
At Kidasha, we have spent 25 years developing and scaling programmes that will make an impact over the long-term. Our ambition is to create ‘proof of concept’ solutions that can then be adopted by local authorities. Our Life Skills Education programme is a fantastic example of this in action.
2022 saw us scale up the Life Skills programme – an initiative focused on practical education adapted to the realities and environments of young people – and deliver sessions across a further 45 government schools. The success of the initiative meant that, this year, the course was formally integrated into the lower secondary school curriculum in Pokhara Metropolitan City.
We have introduced a new generation to the transformative power of sport
Over the last 25 years, we have never stopped looking for new ways to give disadvantaged children in Nepal access to new pathways for development and fresh opportunities to thrive.
This year was no exception. In 2022, we delivered our Breaking Boundaries cricket project in partnership with the MCC Foundation across 14 government schools in Pokhara. We provided infrastructure, kit and regular coaching to 1,115 girls and boys aged between 12 and 16 culminating in an inter-school tournament in the provincial stadium. The event was the first ever inter-school sports tournament between government schools in the region.
This initiative allowed vulnerable children to develop their confidence and interpersonal skills, and hundreds of students have taken pride in representing their school and district this year. We plan to continue and expand this project in 2023.
Looking ahead to 2023
For all of you who have supported us this year and in previous years, we are extremely grateful. Your donations have allowed us to support those who may otherwise have no hope for a safe and secure future. Our work wouldn’t be possible without you.
We hope to continue making a difference in 2023 by replicating and expanding our successful educational programmes and protection services to reach even more children.
With Best Wishes,
The Kidasha Team
