Breaking Boundaries Interschool Cricket Tournament: A Triumph in Pokhara

May 27, 2024 by Emily Ghazarian

We are thrilled to announce the winners of our Breaking Boundaries Interschool Cricket Tournament held in Pokhara! Congratulations to the Kalika Secondary School boys’ team and the Amar Singh Secondary School girls’ team for their outstanding performances in the finals.

This year’s tournament was a resounding success, bringing together 438 children from 16 government schools who participated in 54 exciting matches over 15 days. We believe this to be the only cricket tournament for government schools in Nepal, and with 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams participating the event also had the highest number of teams taking part in a single cricket tournament in Nepal.

This tournament showcased not only the talent and enthusiasm of the young cricketers but also the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Girls:
Amar Singh vs Siddha Mavi
Amar Singh. 105/10
Siddha Mavi. 90/10

Amar Singh won by 15 runs.

Boys:
Shree Kalika vs Navprabhat
Navprabhat. 52/10
Kalika Mavi. 54/4

Kalika Mavi won by 6 wkts.

Chief guest of the closing ceremony was the President of Gandaki Province Sports Council and other guests in the closing ceremony were President of Gandaki Province, President of CAN Kaski, President of Pokhara Municipality Cricket Association and the Pokhara Municipality Sports Board President.

We extend our gratitude to all our partners who made this event possible, particularly the Pokhara Cricket Academy and the MCC Foundation. Their support was instrumental in creating this unforgettable experience for the children, helping us break boundaries and build brighter futures through sports.

This project is part of our Sports for Development work. We know that regular participation in sports has been proven to promote teamwork and leadership, social skills, tolerance, and positive attitudes. Despite these proven benefits, children in urban poverty in Nepal have limited or no opportunity to engage in regular sports. By providing these opportunities, we aim to promote personal growth and community development among the youth.

Keelan bakes, kicks and runs for Kidasha

April 14, 2024 by Emily Ghazarian

Meet Keelan, whose journey supporting Kidasha began in 2016 at the age of 14. It all started with a simple bake sale at his village fete, followed by a sponsored ‘Everest Run’, where he ran 17.6km around his local village.

But Keelan didn’t stop there. He organised a football penalty shoot-out game, facing over 600 penalties! Keelan raised over £1,100, making a significant impact on the lives of children in urban poverty in Nepal.

Fast forward 8 years, and Keelan is still going strong.

In April 2024, he took on Brighton Marathon in support of Kidasha. Despite facing challenges during the marathon, including collapsing due to overheating with 10km left to go, Keelan persevered. After a 45-minute break, he received the green light to continue, crossing the finish line.

Through his incredible efforts and generous support from family, friends and colleagues, Keelan raised over £1500 to give marginalised children in Nepal access to safer, brighter futures.

If Keelan’s story has inspired you to make a difference, we invite you to explore our Get Involved page or reach out to us at enquiries@kidasha.org.

Together, we can help the most excluded children in Nepal to progress out of disadvantage and realise their full potential.

Boost donations to Kidasha with Global Giving’s Little by Little campaign

April 8, 2024 by Emily Ghazarian

Thanks to Global Giving’s ‘Little by Little’ campaign, any donation made to Kidasha between today and Friday will be increased by 50% for all donations up to $50. This means a £40 donation will be boosted to £60!

Any gifts received between 8-12 April will support our rehabilitation centre for street-connected boys. Boys like Samir, who when he was just 10-years-old was found by the police on the street in Pokhara and identified to be at-risk. He was referred to the centre as a matter of child protection, and it quickly became clear that he was facing many complex challenges and getting him safely back to his family and into school would take some time and specialist support.

Thanks to the commitment and expertise of the staff in the centre, now almost 15, Samir is,  living back with his family and becoming a confident well-adjusted young person. Read Samir’s Full Story.

Sadly more children are being identified as at-risk and referred to our centre every month – please help us to provide the protection and support they need by donating this week.

Donate here and get a 50% boost!

Thank you so much in anticipation of your support

Very warm wishes,
The Kidasha Team

International Day of Sports for Development and Peace

April 6, 2024 by Emily Ghazarian

Today, on the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace, we reflect on the impact of sport in shaping the lives of children and communities worldwide. At Kidasha, we recognise the pivotal role sport plays in fostering holistic and healthy development among children.

Empowering Girls Through Cricket: Kidasha’s Partnership with MCC Foundation

By giving some of the poorest and most excluded children in Nepal an opportunity to play cricket, we have seen enormous change in attitudes and tolerance to differences in ethnicity, religion, and gender. In particular, we have seen girls excel in a sport that they never dreamed they would ever be encouraged and supported to play.

In Pokhara, we partner with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Foundation, driving extracurricular cricket development initiatives across 16 schools. We place a strong emphasis on promoting gender equality, ensuring girls have equal opportunities to participate in cricket programmes. We not only cultivate sporting talent but also facilitate access to broader developmental pathways, including training with local and national clubs.

Championing Change in Butwal: Kidasha’s Programme with Local Partners

Our aim is now to build on our experience in Pokhara, and give more children from marginalised communities the opportunity to play a variety of different sports and to persuade schools to integrate sport into the regular curriculum.

Today, in Butwal we’re hosting an events programme with the education department, sports focal teachers, the SGR team, and local professional sports associations, reviewing the progress of our sports initiatives in schools. This brings together key stakeholders to identify challenges, brainstorm solutions, and explore avenues for further support in integrating sports into educational settings. We’re also organising a friendly volleyball match, symbolising the importance of teamwork and collaboration in driving positive change.

The Power of Sport

Beyond the boundaries of the pitch, we instil life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and leadership, empowering children to thrive both on and off the field.

Despite the proven benefits of sports participation, many children living in urban poverty in Nepal lack access to these opportunities. But, with your help, we’re changing that.
